One important marking would be the BYF stamp. Some of the earlier Mausers were.321 diameter.the WWII Mausers were.323, so if you shoot modern 8x57 ammo (especially Norma ammo which is loaded to original specs.while American ammo is loaded down from original specs due to the varying quality of Mauser rifles made during the war and under contract by other countries). Take it to a reliable gunsmith and ask him to slug the barrel. More questions:Is it a sporting rifle or a military?A sporting rifle will have a sporter type stock, often checkered, a military will have long wood almost to the muzzle and a handguard on top of the barrel along with a bayonet lock.A military rifle will have a long elevation-only adjustable rear sight marked up to something like 1500 meters or so.A caliber like 9X? Sounds like one of the odd-ball German calibers used on their sporting rifles.However, a 1943 date is not going to be a commercial rifle, sounds like a Spanish military Mauser re-worked to a sporter.Again, not enough info.have any pictures? I know very little about the 98 series except they were used by the Germans in WW1. It looks to be original, original finish and signs of wear and age.Īll serial numbers match and the caliber is 9X?, the length is hard to see.
We'd need far more information.There are MANY Mauser rifles that might have those markings.Is it a military or commercial model?Is there a crest or logo on the top of the receiver ring, or has it been removed?Is it in original condition or has it been sporterized?What's the actual condition, 95% original finish, 50%, etc?Do the serial numbers on the receiver, bolt, and barrel match?What's the caliber? Is it the original or has it been re-chambered or barreled?I don't know if it's military or commercial, but I didn't see a crest anywhere.
